Build Brand And REAL Fanbase Before You Try To Sell. Musicians, Listen Up!
 
Your goal as a musician is to make music and entertain people. That's it. Yes there is a ton of opportunity to make money in music, but from the fans point of view, that can't be what it looks like you're doing. Put yourself in the fans shoes. Think about how you feel as a fan of anyone's music. The last thing you want is for them to always try to sell you something. You want them to make great music and entertain you. If they pitch a product from time to time, ok cool. But if they're in your face every day hounding you to buy, you feel like a commodity. No one wants to feel that way.
 
So as a musician you need to think as if you were the fan in every situation. Ask yourself, "how would the fan see this?", or even, "how would I feel if my favorite musician did this?". Once you view things from the fan perspective, you will start to have more success in this music industry. Set up all the opportunities possible for fans to give you money, whether merch, music or donation. Then just entertain them. It will all work out in the end.

Musicians Need To Be Musicians And Not Used Car Salesmen

Create music. Create videos. Be entertaining. It's that simple. The sales will come. Have the option for your fans to support you by buying your music and merch, or even donating to you. But constantly trying to sell them your music will only turn them away from you. You need to pull them in with entertaining content and great music. Then they will want to support you on their own and THAT'S where the money is!
